  • Social Committee: Plans and executes the community’s social events. Social events can include holidays, parades, seasonal festivals, community garage sales, etc.
  • Landscape and Maintenance Committee: Oversees the community landscape and maintenance.
  • Safety Committee: Can help develop a neighborhood watch program and build relationships with local law enforcement.
  • Financial Committee: Helps track and review the community’s financials. Can include sub-committees that are dedicated to monthly/annual budget, reserves, and investments.

How Do Committees Help?

Putting the experts in expert positions – One of the advantages of a committee is that you can appoint specific members who have special skills and expertise. If your association has a homeowner who previously worked with a landscaping company, then they’d be able to provide professional insight as a member of the Landscape and Maintenance Committee. Or, maybe there’s a homeowner who has accounting experience, appointing them to the Financial Committee will give the board the benefit of having an accountant on the team. 

By putting those with specialized skills and knowledge in the correct roles within the association, a board can ensure that tasks are being handled by expert hands.

Pull in more of the community – Another advantage of committees is that it gives more opportunities for homeowners to contribute their time and talent to the running of the association. 

Boards have a limited number of seats, which means that each homeowner who wants to assist with the association can’t always hold a position on the board. By creating committees, a board can draw in more homeowners into the running of the association. Not only will this further cement the association as a community, but it will give more opportunities to those who want to help.

Save the board time – Board members work on a voluntary basis and sometimes that can involve a lot of time-consuming meetings. With committees, boards have the ability to delegate work. If a new landscaping company needs to be hired, the board can turn to the Landscaping and Maintenance Committee to research and evaluate landscaping companies, then recommend the best choices to the board. 

This not only saves time for the board members, but it also takes some of the pressure off their shoulders. By having the option to delegate to committees, boards can ensure that items are being given the proper time and attention all while avoiding putting too much work on their own plate.
